Tampa to Fort Myers is 124 miles by Florida's official count, and the entire drive runs on toll-free I-75. That is the short version. The longer version matters because people searching "tampa to fort myers" tend to mean one of three different places at the far end: the city, the airport, or the beach. Those are three different trips with three different mileage figures, and mixing them up is how you end up at the wrong exit.
This guide sorts them out, covers the route and the exits worth knowing, and flags the wrong turns (the Skyway fork near Ellenton and Alligator Alley past Naples) that catch drivers who follow the shield without checking the destination.

The short answer
- City to city: FDOT lists Tampa to Fort Myers at 124 miles, and Fort Myers to Tampa at 125 miles.
- Road: I-75 the whole way. It is toll-free for its entire Florida length once you are north of Alligator Alley.
- Drive time: An OSRM routing estimate for downtown Tampa to downtown Fort Myers comes out around 125.6 miles and roughly 2.4 hours. Treat that as an estimate only. Traffic, construction, and your actual start and end points all move it.
- Airport: Southwest Florida International (RSW) uses I-75 exit 128.
- Beach: Fort Myers Beach uses I-75 exit 131 and then a string of surface roads.
If you want the wider picture of the city you are leaving, the Tampa Florida overview covers the basics, and the Tampa map helps you place downtown, the airport, and the I-75 bypass before you start driving.
The miles: 124, 125, 126, 138 and 149
I kept running into five different numbers for this trip, so here is what each one actually is.
FDOT's official intercity mileage is the cleanest source. The spreadsheet was last updated 9/14/2026, it is in whole miles, and FDOT describes the figures as the shortest distances between city pairs, used for mileage reimbursements. For this pair:
- Tampa to Fort Myers: 124 miles
- Fort Myers to Tampa: 125 miles
I do not average those into 124.5. I also do not know why the direction changes the number. FDOT's table does the same thing on other pairs, sometimes by a mile and sometimes by more.
A separate count gave me about 126 miles for Tampa, Florida to Fort Myers, Florida. That one comes from a different directions tool, so I keep it apart from FDOT's figures. A one- or two-mile gap between two counting methods is normal and not worth worrying about on a two-hour drive.
Then there are two numbers that are not the city at all:
- Tampa to RSW airport: about 138 miles
- Tampa to Fort Myers Beach: about 149 miles
FDOT does not measure either of those. They are different destinations, so they get different mileage. I am not blending 124, 125, 126, 138 and 149 into a single "the drive."
For FDOT's current table, check the official intercity mileage page.
Why you should not add up the in-between cities
It is tempting to build the total out of pieces. I did it once in my head with Punta Gorda: Punta Gorda to Tampa is 103 miles both ways, and Punta Gorda to Fort Myers is 24 both ways. Added together that gives 127, which is not 124 and not 125. FDOT's direct city-pair figure is the one to quote. The pieces are allowed to disagree with the total.
Other Gulf Coast pairs from the same FDOT table, for reference:
| Pair | FDOT miles | |---|---| | Tampa – Bradenton | 41 (reverse 40) | | Tampa – Sarasota | 52 both ways | | Tampa – Venice | 71 both ways | | Tampa – Punta Gorda | 103 | | Tampa – Naples | 164 (reverse 162) | | Bradenton – Fort Myers | 86 | | Sarasota – Fort Myers | 74 | | Venice – Fort Myers | 53 | | Punta Gorda – Fort Myers | 24 | | Fort Myers – Naples | 37 | | Clearwater – Fort Myers | 128 (reverse 129) |
Treat these as separate pairs, not building blocks for a Tampa total.
The route: stay on I-75
Between Tampa and Fort Myers the road is I-75, and there is no toll to pay. Florida's I-75 is about 470.741 miles end to end, Miami Lakes to the Georgia line. After Alligator Alley, the interstate turns north near County Road 951 (exit 101, just east of Naples) and stays toll-free for the rest of its Florida length. Heading north from Fort Myers, the corridor passes Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Venice, Sarasota, and Bradenton before reaching the Tampa Bay area.
US 41, the Tamiami Trail, runs parallel through the towns along the Gulf side. South of Tampa it is the town-through route and I-75 is the eastern bypass. I do not have a separate FDOT mileage for a US 41-only trip, so I am not publishing a second Tampa-to-Fort Myers distance under that name. In practice you will touch US 41 anyway once you leave the interstate for Fort Myers Beach.
Starting from Tampa: downtown versus the airport
The 124 miles are not measured from the airport terminal, and not from any particular hotel. Your first job is getting onto I-75.
I-75 is the eastern bypass around Tampa. Through the metro area it stays east of the bay through Brandon, Temple Terrace, and New Tampa. Downtown connections off the bypass are:
- The Selmon Expressway (SR 618), exit 256
- I-4, exit 261
If you are starting at Tampa International Airport, the airport says it sits just five miles west of downtown, at 4100 George J. Bean Parkway. Plan on that extra stretch before you reach the interstate. Check the airport's own directions for the current approach roads.
The wrong fork: I-275 and the Skyway
The mistake I would watch for is near Ellenton. I-275 splits off the I-75 corridor there (I-275 begins at I-75 exit 228 near Palmetto and runs about 60.237 miles). It heads toward St. Petersburg over the Sunshine Skyway, or toward Tampa over the Howard Frankland, while I-75 stays east of the bay.
If you are going Tampa to Fort Myers, you want I-75, not I-275. The Skyway is a roughly 4.1-mile bridge and it is tolled. Florida's Turnpike West Central Florida rate card, effective April 12, 2026, lists the Skyway at one plaza per direction (North Plaza southbound, South Plaza northbound): $1.16 with SunPass or $1.62 by toll-by-plate for a two-axle vehicle. That toll belongs to the Pinellas crossing. It is not on I-75 between Tampa and Fort Myers, so if you see it coming, you are on the wrong fork.
If St. Petersburg is actually where you are headed, see Tampa to St. Petersburg. For current toll amounts, check the Florida's Turnpike toll rates page rather than relying on a number frozen in an article.
The toll that is not on this trip: Alligator Alley
Alligator Alley is the tolled Everglades stretch of I-75, and it is east-west. It runs from exit 19 in Sunrise to exit 101 just east of Naples, about 75 miles. It has nothing to do with the north-south Tampa to Fort Myers drive.
I mention it because of how the signs read. If you are driving south and you stay on I-75 past Fort Myers because the shield still says south and you assume south means the city, you are aimed at Naples and then at the Alley toward Miami. A historical two-axle toll figure of $3.75 (as of July 1, 2023) is out there, but confirm the current rate on the Turnpike's card before quoting any live number.
Tampa to Miami is a different, longer trip: FDOT lists 250 miles Tampa to Miami and 248 Miami to Tampa. If that is your real destination, see Tampa to Miami. For Fort Myers, do not continue to exit 101.
Three different endings: city, airport, beach
This is the part most distance pages skip. "Fort Myers" can mean three places, and each has its own exit.
The city
Quote FDOT's 124 miles southbound and 125 northbound, and stay on I-75. Which exit you take depends on where in town you are going, so pin the actual address before you leave.
The airport (RSW)
Southwest Florida International Airport is at 11000 Terminal Access Road, Fort Myers, FL 33913. It sits southeast of the city and roughly three miles east of I-75. Use exit 128, then Treeline Avenue. The roughly 138-mile Tampa-to-RSW figure is a separate count and is not FDOT's 124 or 125. FDOT has no airport figure. The airport's own site is the place for current terminal and access details: Lee County Port Authority.
Fort Myers Beach
The beach is farther west, on a barrier island. I followed the Fort Myers Beach chamber's directions:
1. Take I-75 exit 131 onto Daniels Parkway, heading west. 2. Turn left on Tamiami Trail (also called Cleveland Avenue and US 41), about a mile. 3. Turn right on Gladiolus Drive, about a mile. 4. Merge onto Summerlin Road toward the beach, about four miles. 5. Turn left on San Carlos Boulevard, and the beach is at the end.
From the airport, the chamber's sequence starts on Treeline Avenue to Daniels Parkway, then picks up the same US 41 and Summerlin steps.
I am not adding up those "about a mile" and "about four miles" pieces into a precise total. The chamber gave them as loose lengths inside a list of turns. The only full-trip beach figure I have is the roughly 149 miles from Tampa, and it stays labeled as a separate count.
What about Cape Coral?
People often swap in Cape Coral. It is not among the cities FDOT measures, and neither is Fort Myers Beach. There is no Cape Coral pair on FDOT's city list to quote from that table. If Cape Coral is your destination, map it directly.
The drive back: Fort Myers to Tampa
Going north, FDOT's figure is 125 miles. The road is the same I-75, and the toll situation is the same: none.
Where you aim at the Tampa end decides your exit:
- Tampa International Airport: Coming from the south side of the map, the airport's own directions say I-75 North to I-4 west, then I-275 south to exit 39.
- Downtown Tampa: Use the I-4 junction (exit 261) or the Selmon (SR 618, exit 256), not the airport exit.
- Staying on I-75: If you simply keep going north on the bypass, you skip both airport and downtown and end up out in Brandon.
Drive time
I do not have a published drive time from FDOT, because FDOT gives miles. The OSRM routing model puts downtown Tampa to downtown Fort Myers at about 2.4 hours. That is an estimate. Real trips vary with traffic, construction, and whether your destination is the city, RSW, or the beach.
I-75 in Florida has a 70 mph speed limit, but I am not dividing 124 by 70 and calling it your drive time, and I have no construction update to share for the Sarasota or Charlotte County stretches. Check a live traffic map before you leave.
What I would actually do
My Tampa stay ran six months, November 2025 through May 2026, downtown with my aunt and cousins, and the thing I kept coming back to was how many people ask this exact question with the wrong ending in mind. So here is how I would plan it:
- City to city: Quote 124 miles southbound and 125 northbound, and stay on I-75, not the Skyway.
- Airport pin: Get off at exit 128, and do not call that the 124.
- Beach pin: Get off at exit 131 and follow the chamber's US 41, Gladiolus, Summerlin, and San Carlos sequence. Quote 149 miles only as the separate beach count.
- Miami is not on this trip: Do not keep going to exit 101 and pay the Alligator Alley toll unless Miami is the real destination.
I never priced a hotel on this route, so I have no rate to quote for Fort Myers, Brandon, or anywhere along I-75.
FAQ
How far is Tampa from Fort Myers? FDOT lists 124 miles from Tampa to Fort Myers and 125 miles from Fort Myers to Tampa. A separate directions count showed about 126. These are city-to-city figures, not airport or beach figures.
How long is the drive from Tampa to Fort Myers? An OSRM routing estimate for downtown to downtown is roughly 2.4 hours. Treat it as an estimate, since traffic, construction, and your exact start and end points change it.
Are there tolls between Tampa and Fort Myers? Not on I-75. The interstate is toll-free for the rest of its Florida length once you are past Alligator Alley. The tolls people mention are the Sunshine Skyway, which is on the I-275 Pinellas fork, and Alligator Alley, which is east-west beyond Naples. Neither is on this drive.
Which exit do I take for Fort Myers airport? I-75 exit 128, then Treeline Avenue. RSW is at 11000 Terminal Access Road, roughly three miles east of I-75.
Which exit do I take for Fort Myers Beach? Exit 131 onto Daniels Parkway west, then the chamber's sequence of Tamiami Trail (US 41), Gladiolus Drive, Summerlin Road, and San Carlos Boulevard. The Tampa-to-beach figure of about 149 miles is a separate count from FDOT's city pair.
