Tampa International Airport is where most of my Tampa trips actually started. The address is 4100 George J. Bean Parkway, Tampa, FL 33607. TPA sits on the Tampa side of the bay, not in St. Petersburg, and a cheap fare into the wrong airport can undo a good arrival before you leave the curb.
Here is the map I wish I had earlier: airsides, SkyConnect, parking, rideshare, and the traps that send you to PIE or the wrong New York airport. Last updated: November 2, 2026.
Landing Checklist
- Confirm the code is TPA. PIE is St. Pete-Clearwater, across the bay.
- Know your train. Airside shuttles go to the gates. SkyConnect goes to economy parking and the rental car center.
- Use the Express curbs for Uber and Lyft. Not a random arrivals door.
- Book parking ahead when you can. Online is cheaper than drive-up, and the first hour is free in the garages.
The Building: Airsides, SkyConnect, and Baggage Claim
The main terminal is not where the planes are. Airside shuttles run from Level 3 of the main terminal to airsides A, C, E, and F. SkyConnect is a different train. It debuted in 2018 and goes to economy parking and the rental car center. The monorail that used to reach long-term parking closed in 2020 and is no longer in service.
SkyConnect runs 24 hours, slower overnight, under five minutes to the rental center, about every two minutes. If you have no checked bag, the entrance they describe is between P.F. Chang's and Hard Rock Cafe. With a bag, claim it on Level 1 first.
Baggage claim is on Level 1: Red on the north side, Blue on the south. The sign over the escalator names your airline's color. Red ground transportation is nearest belt 9. Blue is nearest belt 7. The color is not the airside letter.
From the airport's airline directory:
- Airside A: Breeze, JetBlue, Sun Country, United
- Airside C: Alaska, Avelo, Southwest
- Airside E: Aeromexico, Air Canada, Delta, Frontier
- Airside F: American, Avianca, British Airways, Cayman Airways, Copa, Discover, Edelweiss, Porter, Virgin Atlantic, WestJet
Red ticketing and baggage: Air Canada, Alaska, Avelo, Breeze, British Airways, Discover, Edelweiss, Frontier, Southwest, Sun Country, WestJet. Blue: Aeromexico, American, Avianca, Cayman Airways, Copa, Delta, JetBlue, Porter, United, Virgin Atlantic.
Curbside check-in, where offered, runs through BAGS from 4:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, and United were marked for it when I looked. Airline airsides can change, so confirm on the TPA airlines page before you leave home.
Security Times and How Early to Arrive
From the airport's own answers: airsides C and E open at 3:30 a.m., A at 3:45, F at 4:00, with the eGates a few minutes before each. The airport says arrive two hours early for domestic and three for international. Some international guidance also says at least two hours. I use three for international.
There is no airport luggage storage. The Marriott on airport property sells day passes that include it; check the hotel for current rates.
Tampa sits in Eastern Time. If you are still sorting clocks after a red-eye, my Tampa time zone guide is the short version.
Distances, Driving In, and Ground Transport
Airport distances from TPA: downtown about 9 miles, cruise port about 9.5, St. Petersburg about 20, Clearwater about 20, Clearwater Beach about 20 to 25, St. Pete Beach about 27, Disney about 76, Orlando about 85. A Tampa ticket and a beach hotel are not the same trip.
Driving in, the exit off I-275 is 39, or 39B if you are coming from St. Pete on I-275 north. East and south fold in through I-4. Highway 60 hits the entrance just east of the Courtney Campbell, west of Westshore.
HART and PSTA do not stop at the terminal door. Their stop is the rental car center, so SkyConnect first. Hotel buses use the four Level 1 lots because the departure-level west crossover is closed to buses.
Yellow Cab is at Red 1 and Blue 2. For current cab rates to downtown, call the company or check the ground transportation page.
Uber, Lyft, and Wridz pick up at Red Express, Blue Express, or the SkyCenter One remote curb. A $5 service fee is added to the fare—I noticed that line on the receipt before I understood why downtown rides felt a bit high. Drop-off can be ticketing, baggage claim, or SkyCenter. Follow the app to the marked Express curb, not whichever arrivals door looks closest. That curb mistake is the tip I kept repeating to anyone flying in for a weekend.
Parking and Rental Cars
Rentals are at the Rental Car Center on SkyConnect. Companies on the airport list include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty, Ace, American, Fox, Payless, Sixt, and Zipcar. Off-airport vans use the remote curb by that center. Waiting there is not allowed. The free cell phone lot is the waiting spot.
Remote bag check runs 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for most domestic flights, and you have to be there 90 minutes before departure. American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, and United participate. No extra airport fee, but airline bag fees still apply. A firearm in a checked bag has to go to the ticket counter.
Current parking rates on the airport site: short term, levels 4 through 9, free the first hour, then $8 an hour, $32 max per 24 hours, clearance 6 feet 8 inches. Long term is free the first hour, then $8 an hour, $26 max, with a Level 4 walkway. Economy on SkyConnect is free the first hour, then $5 an hour, $22 max. Booking ahead is cheaper if you do it at least 24 hours out. Cancel inside that window and they keep half, unless the airport closes. Weather cancellations can support a refund request. Airline delays do not. After 45 days they may impound the car. Confirm live rates on TPA parking before you leave the car.
Westshore hotels sit close enough that many visitors skip a long economy stay. I have a separate note on the Westshore Marriott, and International Plaza is the mall people mean when they say they will kill time near TPA.
International Arrivals and the New York Trap
I did not fly in from overseas during my stay, but the wait is what strands the person at the curb. The airport says you may not reach the main terminal for an hour or more after landing, and the driver cannot sit at baggage claim until you are out. The first hour of short-term is free if they come inside. Otherwise it is the cell phone lot until customs is finished.
They say about 80 percent of arriving passengers can use the passport kiosks. Duty free opens two hours before departure, in airside E across from gate 74 and in airside F in front of screening.
Boston is on the airport's nonstop list. New York is the sloppy search. The route list showed JFK on Delta, Frontier, and JetBlue; LaGuardia on Delta, American, and JetBlue, plus Southwest with a seasonal tag; Newark on JetBlue and United. Islip and White Plains appear too. Flights from Tampa to "New York" will dump you in Newark or a suburban field if you let the cheapest fare decide. Pick the airport first.
One cheap fare billed as New York to Tampa was actually New York to PIE, St. Pete-Clearwater. That is the other side of the bay. Check Tampa International Airport for the live route list before you lock a "Tampa" ticket that is not TPA.
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. The airport's plan ties watches and warnings to the National Weather Service office in Ruskin. Parking may refund a weather cancellation. It will not refund an airline delay. Check with the airline before you head to the curb.
If I do this again, I fly TPA for a Tampa hotel and only take PIE when I mean the beaches and have priced the drive. For a first full day after you land, my things to do in Tampa guide is a cleaner start than winging it from the rental car center.
FAQ
Is Tampa International Airport the same as PIE?
No. TPA is Tampa International at 4100 George J. Bean Parkway in Tampa. PIE is St. Pete-Clearwater International across the bay. A cheap fare into the wrong airport adds a real drive.
How far is TPA from downtown Tampa?
About 9 miles, per the airport's own distance list.
Which airside is my airline at TPA?
It depends on the carrier. As of the airport directory: JetBlue, United, Breeze, and Sun Country use Airside A; Southwest, Alaska, and Avelo use Airside C; Delta, Frontier, Air Canada, and Aeromexico use Airside E; American and most of the long-haul international carriers on the list use Airside F. Confirm on the airlines page before you go, because assignments can move.
How early should I arrive at TPA?
The airport says two hours for domestic and three for international, with some international guidance also saying at least two. I use three for international. Security open times vary by airside, with some doors opening around 3:30 a.m.
Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at Tampa International Airport?
At Red Express, Blue Express, or the SkyCenter One remote curb. A $5 service fee is added to the fare. Drop-off can be ticketing, baggage claim, or SkyCenter.
How much is parking at Tampa International Airport?
On the current airport rate card, short-term maxes at $32 per 24 hours after a free first hour, long-term at $26, and economy at $22. Book ahead when you can, and confirm live rates on the parking page before you leave the car.
Tips From Arrivals
Confirm the ticket says TPA, not PIE. I liked SkyConnect once I stopped confusing it with the airside shuttle; I disliked watching people wait at the wrong curb for rideshare. Book garage parking ahead when you can, and use the free first hour if someone is only circling to pick you up. For international arrivals, send the driver to the cell phone lot until you clear customs—the baggage-claim wait can run long.

Final Thoughts
TPA is a clear airport once you separate the airside shuttle from SkyConnect and stop treating every "Tampa" fare as this campus. Get the code right, get the curb right, and give yourself time on an early bank of flights.
From here I usually point people to a Westshore base like the Westshore Marriott, a shopping break at International Plaza, or a first downtown day from my Tampa things to do list. If Naples is the next drive, use my Tampa to Naples road notes once you have the car.
