Bern's Steak House Tampa is a well-known restaurant in Hyde Park, located at 1208 S Howard Ave, Tampa, FL 33606. The restaurant is known for its prime steaks, which are cut to order and dry-aged in house for 5 to 8 weeks. Guests also find oysters, escargot and 22 different caviars on the menu.

If you want a restaurant in Hyde Park with a long history, Bern's has been serving guests since 1956. The business started on Howard Avenue as a small luncheonette and grew over the years into several dining rooms. Today it is still run by the Laxer family, and the restaurant describes each visit as an experience rather than just a meal.

What to Expect at Bern's Steak House

The restaurant is built around three things: perfectly aged steaks, a large wine collection, and the Harry Waugh Dessert Room. Bern's stores more than half a million bottles and 6,500 labels from around the world. Some are kept in an on-site cellar held at 50 degrees, and others are kept in a temperature-controlled warehouse.

Every night, guests can order a red, white, sparkling or fortified wine by the bottle or choose from more than 150 selections by the glass. The by-the-glass list includes dessert wines and port. Many bottles are current vintages, while others are older and rarer.

The dessert room was built in 1985 using redwood wine casks to create 48 private rooms. It offers nearly 45 desserts, including 15 flavors of homemade ice cream and sorbet, along with artisanal cheeses and wines, ports, sherries and madeiras.

The History Behind Bern's Tampa Restaurant

Bern and Gert Laxer moved to Tampa in 1951 after visiting Bern's aunt, who ran a Chinese restaurant here. They were planning to move on to California but ended up staying. In 1953 they bought a small luncheonette called The Gator Juice Bar, which served orange juice, coffee and cold sandwiches.

The luncheonette grew into a restaurant and then moved to 1208 South Howard Avenue after the Laxers bought the Beer Haven bar. They chose the Bern's name by reusing letters from the old Beer Haven sign. Over time they bought neighboring shops and expanded from one dining room to eight, with about 350 guest seats.

Today, David Laxer, the couple's son, runs the restaurant. He also oversees Bern's Fine Wines and Spirits retail store and the Haven restaurant. The Epicurean Hotel, a Marriott Autograph Collection property across the street, was later developed as part of the Bern's family of businesses.

Absolutely stunning restaurant in Tampa. service was off the charts Next Level the atmosphere was beautiful and the food was incredible I had the 100-day dry aged Delmonico. The cocktails were insane. Allison was the best waitress I've had in years. Absolutely speechless.

It's more than just dinner, it’s an experience. The food was excellent across the board, especially the lobster, French onion soup, and the steaks, all cooked and presented perfectly. What really sets it apart is everything beyond the meal. They offer tours of the kitchen and wine cellar, and you get a behind-the-scenes look at how everything operates, which adds a lot to the experience. The dessert room is a highlight on its own, huge selection, all worth it, and everything we tried was delicious. Reservations are typically needed months in advance since it’s always packed, but it’s absolutely worth planning ahead for.

It had been over 10 years since we've been, and boy we missed this place! The atmosphere, as always, was incredible! It does have a feeling of eating in the Haunted Mansion, but in a good way! Our server Adam was an absolute legend, as he was extremely attentive and very professional. He also had great recommendations, which I listened to, and loved the grilled octopus! The wedge was good, but not our favorite dish. My wife and I then shared the 14oz Chateaubriand, which was cooked to perfection! The side of green beans was also pretty good. The only thing we weren't the biggest fan of was the lobster bisque, which was ok at best. The dessert room, we forgot how cool it really was. Our server was also super attentive and made us a beautiful flambée banana Foster's. My creme brule was also spectacular! Cant wait to be back again soon!

We went here about a years ago and Berns is a very nice fancy restaurant establishment that is very good for food, deserts, and celebrations for all kind. It’s a very delectable restaurant with good food like the shrimp salad and of course the steaks which was like a peace of glory. I didn’t forget about desert room with very sharp ice cream and the jukebox which you can customize and request the piano man to play a song. Also they gave us a tour around the kitchen and how it’s made. I would recommend going here.

I've been trying to get to this place for a while in my trips to Florida and was lucky to actually get in on my last trip. Atmosphere is great, kind of antiquated but in a good way. They lean into their age and history. Service was top notch. My server was Santiago and he was attentive, professional, and extremely personable. Felt like I was meeting a friend I hadn't seen in a long time. His knowledge of wine and the menu was extensive and when I came in asking specific questions about wines and the steak selection he knew exactly the right sections of the menu to steer me towards. Food was amazing as was the wine pairing. I ate by myself and truly savored the perfectly aged steak along with some choice pairing of left bank Bordeaux. I sat in silent contemplation with each bite of aged steak and savored washing it down with amazing wine. A much different experience than the people who were eating in large groups but I'd like to think their meals were also touched by the camaraderie and overall atmosphere. After dinner was a tour of the kitchen and the wine cellar. Top to bottom amazing experience with both. Most people who dine there are probably familiar with their history as the largest wine cellar in a restaurant in the world. Don't pass that up. Then on to the dessert room. Intimate with dim lighting. Again the dessert was amazing. Dutch apple pie served with Chateau d'Yquem. One of the finest pairings I've had in my life. Surrounded by the ambient sounds of people celebrating special occasions and maybe the odd person having a solo adventure like myself. I truly treasured this experience and will hopefully be returning in the near future. Thank you so much to the staff for making my experience so memorable.
