Mema’s Alaskan Tacos Tampa is a restaurant in Ybor City at 1903 N 19th St, serving lightly fried tacos built on a family recipe. If you're planning a meal in the neighborhood, this is a casual spot centered on its signature Alaskan Tacos, plus burritos, chimichangas, quesadillas, nachos and desserts.

The story behind the menu goes back to the 1950s, when Goompa was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. Mema learned to make these tacos from a friend there, and she made them often for the family. The recipe has been passed down through generations, and the tacos are fried for a balance of juicy and crunchy. The restaurant's motto is "Fresh. Delicious. Mema’s."

What to Expect at Mema’s Alaskan Tacos in Tampa

The signature Alaskan Tacos come on a white corn tortilla with your choice of filling. Beef, chicken, or chorizo are priced at, fish at, and shrimp or alligator at. Falafel, tofu, or potato is also. Standard toppings are included, and you can make the taco a double-decker, TACO-RITO style, with refried black beans and a flour tortilla for an extra.

Beyond the tacos, the menu covers a wide range. You'll find street tacos served with cilantro, onion and lime, plus large burritos stuffed with refried black beans and Mexican rice. Chimichangas are deep fried and topped with sour cream and red salsa. Appetizers include tamales, chips with salsa, guacamole, queso or beans, Mexican street corn, and half nachos. The restaurant says it fries in 100% peanut oil and serves Tabasco hot sauce.

For dessert, the options include churros with dipping sauces, churro balls filled with strawberry cream cheese, a churro cookie ice cream sandwich, sopapillas drizzled with local honey, a cheesecake chimichanga, and fried ice cream.

Wonderful taco place in Ybor with great service and atmosphere. The taco shells and chips are freshly made and still have that slightly crispy fried and soft shell that really kind of sizzles in your mouth when you take a bite. The salsa for the chips is really flavorful with just the right amount of spice to sizzle your tastebuds. You can tell the ingredients like the lettuce and tomatoes in the tacos are very fresh and have that lightly airy, and hydrated fresh bite you get like when you bite into a cut cherry tomato. There are fresh drinks in the cooler like Haritos sodas. The wall are decorated with different art pieces and offer you a new interest to keep your mind occupied whether you are dining alone or with your friends or family. Truly an enjoyable little local dining experience!

I was first introduced to Mema’s original location. They had the best Alaskan tacos. Finally checked out the new location today. The Alaskan Cod and chorizo were so good. My Dad had the steak bowl and really enjoyed it. We had sopapilla and churro balls for dessert. Both were good but I prefer the sopapilla. Staff was so accommodating and friendly.

Oh my goodness I haven’t felt this sense of nostalgia, ever. Congratulations to Mema’s Alaskan Tacos on the comeback! A true staple to Ybor, a block away from their old location, food is just as delightful as it always was. The beef, chicken, and chorizo tacos were amazing, fresh crunchy lettuce, the fried tortilla did not taste oily, and the sweet chili tabasco sauce just ugh makes it all so perfect. Thank you for an incredible meal and heartwarming memories!

Sooo Mema’s Alaskan Tacos was a cute spot for a quick bite. The staff were super nice and helpful when explaining their unique taco style. The tacos are fried, which gives them a different twist, and they were pretty good overall. I just wish there was a bit more meat in them. Definitely a solid option if you’re looking for a lighter bite.

This place is phenomenal. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very cozy. Lots of seating options. Service is fantastic. And the food is delicious. My partner got the gator taco and I got the steak quesadilla. Just one taco will leave you with a full stomach for days. Very reasonable prices as well. Definitely will be coming here more often! (Don’t mind the bite in the taco we were too eager to try it!)
