Search for tampa hotels and you get three different trips served up as if they were one. There is downtown Tampa, with the Riverwalk and Water Street. There is the airport and Westshore side, built around flights and business travel. And there is the Gulf beach stay that plenty of people still file under "hotels in Tampa Florida," which is really Clearwater Beach in Pinellas County. I looked at hotels across all three, and the biggest booking mistake I saw was not the brand. It was the neighborhood.
This page is the front door to my Tampa hotel guides. I sort the options by trip type, give you the facts I could confirm, and point you to the dedicated guide for each property. I am not quoting nightly room rates anywhere on this page. Rates move, and I never got one I would treat as a quote. Fees, check-in times, and addresses are a different story, and those I have.

Start with the trip, not the brand
Before comparing hotels, decide which of these you are planning:
- Aquarium, Convention Center, Riverwalk, Water Street dining: stay downtown and accept that valet is the norm.
- A 6 a.m. flight, a layover, or a Westshore business trip: stay on the airport side and learn the shuttle window.
- White sand and Pier 60 energy: you are looking at Clearwater Beach, which is Pinellas County, not Tampa proper.
If you want to see how these areas sit against each other, the Tampa map guide helps place the neighborhoods. For arrival logistics, the Tampa International Airport guide covers getting in and out. Tampa International is the main arrival airport for hotel guests, and the official Tampa International Airport site is the place to check current details.
Downtown Water Street and the Riverwalk
This is the cluster most visitors mean by downtown Tampa hotels. The Tampa Convention Center at 333 S Franklin St anchors demand here, and the Tampa Convention Center site lists Marriott Water Street, the JW, and Embassy Suites across the street, with the Westin Waterside about 0.3 miles away and the Hilton Downtown about 0.5 miles. The Riverwalk itself is described in convention-center attendee materials as about 2.4 miles of walkable path.
Not every hotel with "Riverwalk" in its marketing actually touches the path. If that distinction matters to you, start with my sorter: Tampa Riverwalk Hotels: Which Ones Touch the Path. Friends of the Riverwalk groups its Riverwalk hotel list to include Hotel Tampa Riverwalk, Hilton Downtown, Hyatt Place and Hyatt House, the Marriott, the JW, and the Barrymore.
The Marriott pair
Marriott treats JW Marriott Tampa Water Street and Tampa Marriott Water Street as a pair joined by a glass skybridge. Combined, Marriott describes 1,246 rooms and suites across the two buildings, three rooftop pools, a spa, and more than 150,000 square feet of event space. The neighborhood is Water Street Tampa, with the Riverwalk, Benchmark International Arena, and Sparkman Wharf close by.
These are two hotels, not one lobby with two names. I kept catching myself treating "Marriott Water Street" as a single door. Tampa Marriott Water Street is at 505 Water Street (813-221-4900), and the JW is at 510 Water Street (813-221-4950). If a map pin and a phone number ever disagree, trust the phone number. Some older listings still use the name "Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina," and a few city materials show scrambled addresses, so matching the number is the safest check.
At Tampa Marriott Water Street, the hotel is pet-friendly. Marriott's rooms page lists a destination fee of $20 per night with inclusions like a daily food and beverage credit, a beverage tasting, a choice of water taxi for two or an hour of water sports or bike rentals, and enhanced Wi-Fi. Fee and inclusions are subject to change, so confirm when you book. For fees, dining hours, parking, and how to tell the two buildings apart, read Marriott Water Street Tampa: Fees, Dining, Parking and Which Hotel You're Booking.
Visit Tampa Bay lists check-in at 4 p.m., check-out at 11 a.m., and valet parking with a charge. I never got a garage price, so I am not printing one.
The Tampa EDITION
The Tampa EDITION is in the same Water Street district at 500 Channelside Drive, but it is its own building. It has 172 guest rooms and 30 suites, including a penthouse listed at 2,059 square feet. Check-in is 4 p.m., check-out is 11 a.m., and the minimum check-in age is 18. The hotel's own getting-here information lists overnight valet at $58 plus taxes, daytime valet at $40 plus taxes, and event valet at $60 plus taxes, with a validation note tied to food-and-beverage spend. That is valet pricing, not a room rate. Dining is under Michelin-starred Chef John Fraser. If you are weighing the more design-forward end of the market, The Tampa EDITION: 5 Things to Know Before You Book lays out what I would check first.
North of the river and Harbour Island
Downtown Tampa hotels are not all within a few steps of Water Street. The distances quoted by different sources for the same hotel often disagree, which is the main thing to plan around.
Hilton Tampa Downtown is at 211 N. Tampa Street (813-204-3000). Its own marketing says "steps from the Riverwalk." Friends of the Riverwalk says two blocks. The city says 0.5 miles from the convention center, and one tourism source puts it at two miles. Steps, two blocks, half a mile, two miles: I would not plan a walk around any of those numbers without checking a map. What I confirmed: 17 floors, check-in at 4 p.m., check-out at noon, pets allowed, a rooftop pool, and a $100 nightly security deposit (a deposit, not the room price). Note that "Hyatt Regency" is the historical name for this property. It is the Hilton now.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Tampa Downtown Convention Center is at 513 S. Florida Avenue (813-769-8300). It is an all-suite property with 360 suites, a skybridge to the convention center, and free made-to-order breakfast plus an evening reception. Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.
Hyatt Place and Hyatt House share an address at 325 N. Florida Avenue (813-616-1234). The tourism bureau treats them as one dual-branded hotel with 345 guestrooms. Friends of the Riverwalk lists them separately. As far as I can tell it is one roof.
The Westin Tampa Waterside is on Harbour Island at 725 S. Harbour Island Boulevard (813-229-5000). It is blocks from the convention center and the cruise port, with the streetcar one block away. Check-in is 3 p.m. and check-out is noon. The hotel's own materials put over 85 percent of rooms with water views and offer a shuttle on demand within three miles, if available. The name trips people up: it has appeared as Westin Tampa Waterside, Westin Tampa Downtown Waterside, and Westin Tampa Harbour Island. One building. "Waterside" sounds like the Gulf, and it is not. The hotel itself lists Clearwater Beach at 25 miles. My full write-up is 6 Things to Know About the Westin Tampa Waterside Before You Book.
Aloft Tampa Downtown is at 100 W. Kennedy Boulevard (813-898-8000), a select-service hotel with a 24-hour waterfront fitness center and a river-front splash pool. Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.
The Barrymore
The Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk is the clearest example of a name that oversells the location. It uses "Riverwalk" in the name but sits near the path, not on it. The city gives the address as 111 W. Fortune Street (813-223-1351), 1.4 miles from the convention center. What I can state firmly: self-parking is $20 a night per vehicle, the pet fee is $75 for the whole stay, check-in is 3 p.m., check-out is 11 a.m., and the pool deck sits over the Hillsborough River with no lifeguard. A shuttle runs 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. within two miles, though not to the airport. Full details are in Staying at the Barrymore Hotel Tampa: My Honest Riverwalk Guide.
A renovation to know about
Hotel Tampa Riverwalk is on Friends of the Riverwalk's list, but its FAQ says renovations run through November 30, 2026, with the pool and food and beverage closed during that time. The fitness center stays open 24/7. Confirm on the hotel's FAQ before booking, since closures can change.
Westshore and the airport side
This is a different trip from Water Street, and it works best when the airport or business travel is the point.
Westshore Marriott sits on N Westshore Blvd near the malls and the airport corridor. Before booking, read Westshore Marriott Hotel Tampa: 6 Things to Know Before You Book.
A few other airport-side properties I looked at, so you can see how this category differs:
- Tampa Airport Marriott has the airport in its address: 4200 George J. Bean Parkway. It has renovated rooms, soundproof windows, and day-use rooms from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. It suits a layover or an early flight, not a Riverwalk stroll.
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Tampa Airport is at 3025 North Rocky Point Drive East. The hotel lists a complimentary airport shuttle from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., free breakfast from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., and complimentary parking for guests (or $10 a day if you leave a car for a cruise or flight). Pets are $75 per stay, dogs only, with a two-pet limit. It has no on-site restaurant and lists the Clearwater beaches at about 20 miles. That last detail is the whole point: an airport hotel can put you near the terminal and still leave the Gulf as a separate drive.
- Holiday Inn Tampa Westshore - Airport Area is at 700 North Westshore Blvd. Minimum check-in age is 21, check-in is 3 p.m., and a complimentary airport shuttle runs 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. On-site parking is $15 a day. Breakfast is included only for preferred key accounts, so do not assume it is free for everyone.
Seminole Hard Rock
Seminole Hard Rock Tampa is a separate hotel and entertainment campus, not a downtown waterfront stay, and it should not be treated as a Riverwalk hotel. If you are weighing it for its hotel, dining, or concerts, use the dedicated guide: Seminole Hard Rock Tampa: Hotel, Dining, Concerts Guide.
The "Tampa hotel" that is really Clearwater Beach
If your plan is a beach week, a lot of hotels labeled as Tampa are actually on Clearwater Beach. Opal Sands Resort, for example, is at 430 S Gulfview Blvd, Clearwater Beach, with 230 gulf-front rooms and suites and direct beach access. It is a Gulf trip. Selling it as a Tampa hotel without saying Clearwater is how people book the wrong water. The downtown and airport hotels above put you 20 to 29 miles from those beaches by the hotels' own numbers, which is a drive, not a walk.
Reading the address (for visitors from abroad)
The phrase "hotels in Tampa USA" exists because a bare "Tampa" is not enough on a booking site that sells rooms worldwide. A few things the address wording does and does not do:
- USA only picks the country. After that, read the state (Florida), the ZIP, and the street. Downtown Harbour Island and a Westshore business park both say Tampa, Florida, USA, with different ZIP codes.
- Phone numbers start with +1, the US country code, then 813 for Tampa. The 1 is not optional.
- Tampa Bay is the marketing region; Tampa is the city. A hotel with Tampa in the name can still sit in a different town on the bay or in a different county.
- Minimum check-in age can be 21, as at the Westshore Holiday Inn, while other hotels use 18. Check before you arrive.
- Fees are in US dollars and are extra. The Marriott's $20 destination fee and Hotel Flor's $30 daily destination fee (with a $15 food-and-beverage credit) are examples of costs that sit on top of a nightly rate.
Check-in times vary by hotel: 4 p.m. at the Marriott towers, EDITION, and Hilton, 3 p.m. at the Westin and the Barrymore. I would not assume a room is ready when the flight lands.
Getting around without a car
If you stay downtown, the TECO Streetcar connects downtown, Channelside, and Ybor, which helps if you skip a rental car. The Westin is one block from a streetcar stop. Parking, when you do have a car, is usually valet or a city garage downtown. The City's parking rates page covers public garage pricing, and my individual hotel guides carry the hotel-specific numbers I could confirm. At the airport hotels the picture flips: some offer free guest parking, some charge a daily rate, and shuttle windows matter more than walkability.
How to choose
People ask for the best hotels in Tampa and Tampa luxury hotels, and the honest answer depends on which trip you are on. A few rules of thumb from what I looked at:
1. Pick the neighborhood first. Parking and shuttle details come second. The brand name is the easy part. 2. Treat "near" and "steps from" with suspicion. Downtown distances to the Riverwalk and the convention center vary by source for the same hotel. Check a map. 3. Budget for fees. Destination fees, valet, and parking change the real cost of a stay. 4. Match phone numbers to addresses at the two Marriott towers, since old names and scrambled listings are still around. 5. Confirm what is open. Renovations, like the one at Hotel Tampa Riverwalk, can close pools and restaurants. 6. Restaurant reservations are worth making at the downtown hotel dining rooms, including Lilac at the EDITION, Anchor and Brine at the Marriott, and Lona.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay in Tampa for the first time? If you want the Riverwalk, the Aquarium, Water Street dining, and the Convention Center, stay downtown. Start with Tampa Riverwalk Hotels: Which Ones Touch the Path to sort which properties are actually on the path.
Is Seminole Hard Rock a downtown Tampa hotel? No. It is a separate hotel and entertainment campus. See the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa guide for hotel, dining, and concerts.
Are Tampa hotels near the beach? Generally not. Downtown and airport hotels are a drive from the Gulf. The Westin lists Clearwater Beach at 25 miles, and the Rocky Point Holiday Inn Express lists the Clearwater beaches at about 20 miles. For a beach stay, you are looking at Clearwater Beach.
Do Tampa hotels charge extra fees beyond the room rate? Often, yes. Tampa Marriott Water Street lists a $20 nightly destination fee, and Hotel Flor lists a $30 daily destination fee. Valet at the EDITION runs $40 to $60 plus taxes depending on the type. Always confirm current fees on the hotel's official page.
What is the difference between the JW Marriott and Tampa Marriott Water Street? They are two connected hotels at different addresses (510 and 505 Water Street). Read Marriott Water Street Tampa: Fees, Dining, Parking and Which Hotel You're Booking before you book.
Where to go next
I spent six months in Tampa from November 2025 to May 2026, based downtown with my aunt and cousins, so the Water Street and Riverwalk side is the part of town I know best. For the full picture, work through the guides above: the Riverwalk sorter, the Marriott Water Street guide, the Westin Waterside, the Tampa EDITION, the Barrymore, the Westshore Marriott, and Seminole Hard Rock. Pick the neighborhood first, and the rest of the booking gets a lot easier.
Meeting demand often tracks the Tampa Convention Center on Franklin Street.
Dinner plans pair naturally with the Tampa restaurants hub.
