When people ask me about a Tampa water park, they almost never mean a place with that exact name on the gate. There is no attraction branded Tampa Water Park. What they usually mean is Adventure Island, the seasonal United Parks water park at 10001 N McKinley Drive, Tampa, FL 33612, immediately north of Busch Gardens. Phone 813-884-4386.

From downtown / the Riverwalk, Adventure Island is a real drive, not a streetcar hop, and the calendar matters as much as the ticket. Adventure Island is a seasonal water park. On its Park Info page the park says thanks for the season, that it is now closed for the 2026 season, and that it looks forward to welcoming guests back in 2027—meaning the 2026 operating season has ended, not that the park sat dark every day of the calendar year. The site does not publish a specific 2027 opening day on Park Info; plan on spring 2027 and check the site for the live calendar. 2027 Fun Card materials already list Adventure Island validity through October 24, 2027, which is an end-of-season marker, not an opening date. Last updated: November 2, 2026.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Name check. “Tampa water park” almost always means Adventure Island next to Busch Gardens.
  • Season first. Confirm the 2027 calendar on the park site before you book a hotel day around it.
  • Separate tickets. A Busch Gardens ticket does not automatically include the water park.
  • Pack light. Outside food and personal chairs stay out; water bottles are the usual exception through security.

Where Adventure Island Is, and Why the Name Confuses People

Adventure Island’s own directions put it about eight miles northeast of downtown, two miles east of I-275 at Busch Boulevard, and two miles west of I-75 at Fowler Avenue exit 265. It is not downtown and it is not the beach. It shares a neighborhood and a parent company with Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, which is the trap that burns day-trippers.

You can buy Busch Gardens alone, Adventure Island alone, or multi-park tickets that mix Florida parks including both. A dry-park ticket does not get you into the wet park on its own. Adventure Island is seasonal. The park tells you to check its calendar for hours and the same for tickets. In fall seasons I watched, the calendar often ran a Friday-through-Sunday pattern with a late-October end. I would not drive from a downtown hotel on a random weekday without checking that calendar first—and right now, with the 2026 season ended, the check is the 2027 calendar (spring 2027, confirm on the site).

Confirm status and hours on Adventure Island park info.

What Is Inside When the Park Is Open

By the park’s own description: Endless Surf, a 17,000-square-foot wave pool; Rambling Bayou, a half-mile lazy river; Paradise Lagoon; Castaway Falls, the multi-level splash complex with tipping buckets and kid slides; Shaka-Laka Shores, a zero-depth splash zone with 25 play elements. Slides include family raft rides like Colossal Curl with a 48-inch minimum. Height rules are enforced per attraction.

Outside food and coolers stay out except water bottles, with dietary exceptions through security. Personal chairs stay out. Parking starts at $35 plus tax unless you have the right annual pass tier. Tickets are date-specific and non-refundable. Capacity can pause entry on crowded days.

Heat is half the story. Weather-or-Not Assurance on eligible tickets can cover early weather closures, long weather-related ride stops, or a heat index of 110 or above, but it does not refund parking or cabanas. That is the Tampa water park most people are hunting, even when they never say Adventure Island.

Other Water Places People Mean (and What They Are Not)

While I was sorting the phrase, I also confirmed the near-misses so I would not send someone to the wrong gate.

Buccaneer Bay sits inside Weeki Wachee Springs State Park at 6131 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee / Spring Hill, north of Tampa, not in Tampa city limits. Beach and swimming run daily; park hours were listed 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. year-round when I checked, with a separate seasonal schedule for slides and the lazy river. Cannonball needs 48 inches; Pirate’s Revenge and the lazy river need 42 inches. The kiddie pool was closed for renovations when I looked. Coolers larger than 45 quarts, tents, and grilling are restricted. Spring-fed water and a different vibe—not a clone of Adventure Island.

ZooTampa at Lowry Park, 1101 W. Sligh Avenue, is a zoo, not a water park. It has the Billabong Splash Pad in the Australia realm and Roaring Springs as cool-off spots if you already bought zoo admission. That is a splash pad inside a zoo day. See my ZooTampa guide if that is the animal day you want.

Downtown, public splash pads at Water Works Park and Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park work for little kids after a Riverwalk walk. They are not ticketed water parks. Water Works is an easy add after lunch near Ulele.

Further out, people also lump in Splash Harbour in Indian Rocks Beach, Epperson Lagoon in Wesley Chapel, SouthShore Bay Lagoon in Wimauma, Mirada Metro Lagoons in San Antonio, Florida, and LEGOLAND Florida Water Park in Winter Haven (water-park add-on required). Those are real. None is named Tampa Water Park. None sits next to Busch Gardens the way Adventure Island does.

Tickets, Parking, and Getting There From Downtown

From downtown or the Riverwalk, plan a drive or rideshare to McKinley Drive. If your hotel is already near Busch Gardens, you still need an Adventure Island ticket and an open calendar day.

Online single-day tickets have been advertised from the low $30s when the park is selling dates; parking is separate and starts around $35 plus tax for general parking on the park FAQ. Preferred parking costs more. Annual pass tiers can change the parking math. Buy parking ahead when you can. Confirm live ticket and parking prices on Adventure Island tickets and parking before you go.

Multi-park Fun Cards and length-of-stay tickets still require Adventure Island to be operating that day. I noticed people buy a combo in Orlando, take a morning shuttle to Tampa, and arrive on a weekday when the water half is closed for the season. The park reminds you in the fine print that Adventure Island is seasonal. After the 2026 season ends, combo tickets and Fun Cards still need an open operating day in 2027 before the water-park half is useful.

If you are flying in first, use my TPA arrival guide, then decide whether a water-park day belongs in this trip or a 2027 return.

Packing and Heat Mistakes I Would Avoid

Leave coolers and personal chairs in the car. Bring a refillable water bottle. Check swimwear for metal bits before you queue for a body slide. Measure kids at home against the posted height rules. Cabana shade sells out. Prepaid parking is smarter than circling on a hot morning.

At Weeki Wachee, watch the slide and lazy-river calendar separately from beach hours. At downtown splash pads, bring towels and expect no theme-park lockers.

For a wider Tampa plan that is open year-round, my things to do in Tampa list and the Florida Aquarium cover indoor and downtown options when the water park is dark.

FAQ

Is there a place called Tampa Water Park?

No. People saying “Tampa water park” or “water parks in Tampa” usually mean Adventure Island at 10001 N McKinley Drive, next to Busch Gardens.

Is Adventure Island open in 2026?

As of the park’s own park-info page in late 2026, Adventure Island is closed for the 2026 season and looks forward to welcoming guests back in 2027. Check adventureisland.com for the current calendar before you book.

Does a Busch Gardens ticket include Adventure Island?

No. They share a company and a neighborhood, but tickets are separate unless you buy a product that specifically includes both and the water park is operating that day.

How much is parking at Adventure Island?

General parking starts at $35 plus tax on the park FAQ, with preferred parking priced higher. Pass members may park free or discounted with the right tier and ID. Confirm current rates when you book.

What else can I do if I wanted a water day in Tampa?

For toddlers, try downtown splash pads at Water Works or Julian B. Lane. For a spring-fed swim and slides on a day trip, look at Buccaneer Bay at Weeki Wachee. For a cool indoor day, the Florida Aquarium downtown is the easier play from a Riverwalk hotel.

Final Thoughts

Adventure Island is the real answer behind “Tampa water park,” and seasonality is the rule that trips people up. From downtown, it is a McKinley Drive day, not a sidewalk hop. Right now the honest planning tip is simpler than a slide list: confirm 2027 dates before you build a Tampa itinerary around Endless Surf.

If you need something open while you wait, start with my things to do in Tampa guide, keep ZooTampa for animals, and save Westshore shopping at International Plaza for a cooler afternoon.
