When people say "Tampa aquarium," they almost never mean a building with that name on the door. They mean The Florida Aquarium at 701 Channelside Drive in the Channel District. Phone (813) 273-4000. From a downtown base, this was the Channelside stop I reached for when I wanted a real attraction without turning the day into a theme-park slog.
It is a science and conservation aquarium, not a theme park and not ZooTampa. Most of the walk is air-conditioned, which matters on hot Channel District afternoons—something I noticed the first time we walked over from the Riverwalk side. Here is how I plan a visit: tickets, hours, parking, what general admission covers, and the name traps that send people to the wrong waterfront. Last updated: November 2, 2026.
Before You Buy Tickets
- Buy ahead. Plan-ahead pricing by date means the earlier purchase for that day is usually the better price. Aim for at least 24 hours ahead when you can.
- Start under the dome. Wetlands of Florida, then the big reef windows, then The Tide Pool upstairs.
- Park with a plan. Use prepaid parking from your ticket email when it is offered, or one of the Channelside garages below. Valet at the door is not a sure thing on cruise-ship days.
- Leave the 2024 rumor behind. Advance tickets help, but walk-up window tickets are allowed again. Members do not have to reserve.
Tickets, Hours, and Getting There
The aquarium prices admission by the date you pick. Buy ahead before you arrive for the cheapest price on that date. They say the price can go up, never down, the longer you wait. The window costs more.
Tickets are for the date you selected, non-refundable, and non-transferable. Resale is prohibited. If you cannot go, call (813) 273-4000. They may move an unused ticket up to a year, and you pay any price difference. SeaTREK has to be moved at least 24 hours ahead or it is gone. The Wild Dolphin Cruise moves with the admission ticket inside that same year.
Posted hours: January through May 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June and July 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., August through December 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hours can change on public holidays, holiday weekends, and school breaks. Confirm the morning you go on The Florida Aquarium site.

For a wider downtown plan, I pair this stop with my favorite things to do in Tampa list and keep Water Street dinner for after, often at Yard House.
1. Walk the Wetlands Under the Glass Dome
The Wetlands of Florida under the 80-foot glass dome is the stretch I care about most. Mangroves that have been growing inside for decades, river otters, an alligator, roseate spoonbills, white ibis. It feels like a Florida habitat folded into a downtown building.
Above that, Lemur Lookout surprised me. I did not come to an aquarium for ring-tailed lemurs, and then there they were. The dome is glass, so I would not call this zone cool in July just because the rest of the building is air-conditioned.
2. Stand at the Coral Reefs and Heart of the Sea Windows
Their map describes a 500,000-gallon Coral Reefs habitat with a panoramic window. Heart of the Sea is the second-largest tank, about 15 feet deep, redone in June 2024 as an Indo-Pacific scene with a loggerhead, Napoleon or Māori wrasse, blue speckled grouper, spotted unicornfish, and clownfish.
SeaTREK is the paid walk on the bottom of that tank for non-divers ages 10 and up. It is an add-on, not part of general admission. Book it as its own thing if you want it.
3. Touch The Tide Pool, Then Decide on Add-Ons
The Tide Pool opened August 1, 2025, on the second-floor mezzanine: a cold-water touch habitat with more than 200 marine invertebrates. General admission covers habitats and exhibits including that tide pool. It does not cover the add-ons.
The extras people mix into the main ticket: Penguin Encounter, sloth encounter, stingray feeding, AquaEd, Undersea Explorer VR, SeaTREK, and the Wild Dolphin Cruise. The cruise runs on their 72-foot catamaran, Bay Spirit II, from near the outdoor plaza. When I checked, the cruise was $17 per adult and $15 per child ages 3 to 11, free under 2, and you still need same-day general admission. Weekday departures were 1:00 and 2:30, weather permitting. Get wristbands from Guest Services and arrive early for boarding. Stroller parking at the boat. Limited access for mobility devices; do not assume a wheelchair user can board. Confirm current cruise pricing and times before you go.
4. Know What Is Not in This Building
The sea turtle hospital is not downtown. Their Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center is in Apollo Beach. Downtown you get the conservation story, the coral exhibit work, and the Coral Conservation and Research Center. If you came expecting rehab turtles in a hospital ward, you are on the wrong block.
They also stopped printing maps. QR codes on the walls, or ask a staffer. Bring a charged phone.
This is not ZooTampa at Lowry Park, not Busch Gardens, not Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and not MOSI. CityPASS can put several of those on one pass. Clearwater Marine Aquarium is across the bay. People who want the Tampa aquarium and then burn a day in Clearwater by accident are working off the wrong pin.
Parking Near the Florida Aquarium
Channel District parking fills—I learned that the hard way on a weekend when a cruise ship was in and the door valet was not running. The aquarium points people to prepaid parking in the ticket confirmation email. Walking options they name:
- Channelside Parking Garage, 369 S 12th Street, about 0.2 mile
- City of Tampa lot, 864 Channelside Drive, about 0.2 mile
- Cumberland Garage, 1045 E Cumberland Avenue, about 0.3 mile
Valet sits at the main entrance on Channelside, run by The Car Park, most days during regular hours, subject to availability. Regular valet rates are $20 for up to three hours and $40 after three hours, with $5 off for members who show a membership card. They cannot run valet when a cruise ship is in at Terminal 2, and pricing can change in peak periods. Check current parking details before you rely on the door. Bike, bus, scooter, the TECO Line Streetcar, or water taxi are the other ways in.
If you are flying in the same trip, my Tampa International Airport arrival guide covers the TPA side before you head downtown.
Useful Things to Know Before You Go
Advance tickets are about price and a smoother entry. Window tickets are allowed. Advance is recommended. Members do not have to reserve; members without a reservation check in at the window. Member help line: (813) 273-4030.
Military discount is a window deal. Military and retired military get 10 percent off the whole order at the window with ID, and that one does not need an advance reservation. AZA reciprocal membership is a separate program.
CityPASS is a bundle, not a parking pass. It can cover this aquarium plus other Tampa Bay stops. It does not include parking. Treat pass comparison numbers as pass math, not the aquarium's live calendar price.
Confirm hours the morning you go. Holiday weeks and school breaks move the clock. Thanksgiving and Christmas are closed on the regular calendar.
FAQ
Is the Tampa aquarium the same as The Florida Aquarium?
Yes. "Tampa aquarium," "aquarium in Tampa," and "Florida Aquarium Tampa" all point to The Florida Aquarium at 701 Channelside Drive. There is no separate attraction branded only as the Tampa aquarium.
How long does a visit to the Florida Aquarium take?
The aquarium says the average visitor spends about two hours. Add more time if you booked SeaTREK, an encounter, or the Wild Dolphin Cruise.
Is the Florida Aquarium worth it?
For me, yes, especially on a hot day when I still want something downtown. The wetlands dome and the reef windows are the heart of a regular ticket. If you want rides and a full outdoor park day, that is a different stop.
When is the best time to go with kids?
Go earlier in the day, when the building is quieter and you still have energy for The Tide Pool upstairs. Weekday mornings outside school-break weeks are usually calmer than weekend afternoons. Summer hours stretch to 6 p.m. in June and July, which helps if you need a longer buffer.
How much does the Florida Aquarium cost?
Admission is priced by date. Advance purchase for your date is the cheapest path they describe. Add-ons cost extra. Check live tickets on flaquarium.org for your day.
Where should I park for the Florida Aquarium?
Start with prepaid parking in your ticket email. Nearby options include the Channelside Parking Garage, the city lot on Channelside Drive, and Cumberland Garage. Valet at the entrance is not available on some cruise-ship days.
Tips From Our Visits
Buy the date ahead when you can—the price ladder is real. Start under the wetlands dome while everyone still has patience, then the reef windows, then The Tide Pool upstairs. I liked the indoor heat relief and the otters; I disliked discovering add-ons were separate after someone assumed the cruise was “included.” Leave Clearwater Marine Aquarium for a different day across the bay. Bring a charged phone because they stopped printing maps.
Final Thoughts
I like the Florida Aquarium because it answers the downtown heat problem without turning the day into a theme-park slog. From downtown it is the easy Channelside win. The wetlands dome and the big reef windows are the heart of it. The name confusion is the tax you pay for living in a bay area with more than one water attraction.
Plan by the Channelside address, buy ahead when you can, and confirm hours before you leave. If you are building a bigger Tampa day, start with my things to do in Tampa guide, keep ZooTampa for a separate animal day, and save Westshore shopping at International Plaza for another afternoon.
